In BC, a land acknowledgement is a way non-Indigenous people formally recognize that they are situated on the unceded land of Indigenous peoples, which is necessary work. In “Greater Vancouver”, when someone from the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territory, like Quelemia from the Musqueam nation, is called in, she is doing more than simply a land acknowledgement. It is more like a traditional welcome, incorporating protocol and sharing knowledge and teachings.

(“Unceded” means that the land was never legally ceded or given up through a treaty or other  agreement.)

If you are looking for guidance or specific help with Indigenous material — like the creation of Indigenous characters, storylines, perspectives, or world views, she can help you avoid clichés and stereotypical tropes.

Quelemia’s role as an Indigenous Story Consultant will be tailored to each specific project and client. Depending on the project, this could involve dramaturgical sessions, ongoing consultations to create in-depth Indigenous content, writing an episode of your series, co-writing, and/or all of the above.
